Peru Information
The tomato is a plant native to the Andean highlands of South America, primarily around present-day Peru. It is believed that wild varieties from the Andes were carried by humans and birds to Mexico, where they began to be cultivated and consumed. Following Columbus’s discovery of the Americas, tomatoes spread throughout Europe. The wild varieties still found in the Andes today resemble modern cherry tomatoes, bearing numerous small fruits in a “cherry type” form.
